Iola High’s Addie Haar will play basketball for Allen Community College next season. Haar signed a letter of intent last week.
“It’s close to home and I get to keep doing what I love,” Haar said.
For an undersized Iola team, the 5-9 Haar played forward and was a key rebounder for the Fillies. She will more than likely suit up at guard for the Red Devils.
“She plays really hard. She’s fundamentally sound, so I think she’ll bring that kind of toughness and inside play,” ACC coach Katie Mahoney said. “I know she played inside for Iola. She won’t play that for us.”
Mahoney explained Haar may see some time as a small forward, but will primarily play on the outside. She also said that she likes that Haar has the capability to guard post players.
“Being able to do both makes her more valuable because we had to have guards guard post players last year and they’d never done it,” Mahoney said. “Having somebody with a little experience will help whether we’re in zone or man [defense].”
Haar helped lead the Iola Fillies to a 12-9 record and the Class 4A-II substate finals this season. Allen finished the year 5-26.
Haar said she will miss her Fillies teammates, but is looking forward to getting to know her new ones at Allen.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to play and getting to grow as a player, since I’ll be playing on the outside, too,” Haar said.
Mahoney saw Haar play at some of Iola’s games this season, but really got to see her play last summer.
“Our girls played pick-up with their girls and I got to see her,” Mahoney said. “Probably the best thing is she’s a really good kid and works well in the classroom. She’s going to make the right decisions and do the right thing.”
Haar will more than likely only be able to play a year at Allen because of her grades.
“I think I can only play at Allen for one year because I already have so many credits there, so it will probably be one year,” Haar said. “Then, I’ll see how it goes.”
Allen’s basketball season starts in November.
